Description

This authentic and historic "one of a kind" period Guidon Flag was used in Vietnam by the US Army's 3rd Battalion 47th Infantry Regiment 9th Division "River Raiders" Combat Support Company between 1967-1969.
Formed in 1917, the 47th Infantry Regiment saw action in WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War.  The 3rd Battalion of the 47th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the famous 9th Infantry Division (The Old Reliables) from WWII until 1991.  You can see where the 3 was removed from this guidon flag sometime after Vietnam when the 3rd Battalion was deactivated.  The 47th Infantry Regiment's deployment in Vietnam was portrayed in the movie Forrest Gump battle scenes.  Gump's character was in the 4th Battalion of the 47th Infantry, but in real life the battalions of the 47th were involved in the same conflicts in Vietnam's Mekong Delta.  The 47th Infantry worked side by side with the US Navy in their riverine operations.  The Mekong Delta area was famous for its rice patties, mud, mosquitos, rain, rivers, and fierce battles with the opposition.  Due to the harsh environment and the need for disease control, the men would spend 3 days out in the field at a time, and then would be brought back to the boats where they would dry out and get some rest before doing it all over again.  Their main mission was to seek and destroy the VC, but it was not uncommon to be ambushed without safe cover in the Mekong Delta.
