    Description

William DeHart modernist sterling silver belt with turquoise "fish" motif embellishment and "chain" closure.
This is exquisite, one-of-a-kind (custom?) piece of modernist jewelry. (Web research has not revealed anything like this). I received it from someone who loved fish (being a Pisces) so the belt could have been custom-made.
The belt is signed by the artist
    (see photo).
It was most likely purchased in Albuquerque, NM in the early 50s based on bio information below and family provenance.
"William DeHart, modernist jeweler (1914-1993); Albuquerque, NM & Newbury, MA; active 1940s/1960s; jeweler and silversmith, worked independently in NM in the late 40s/early 50s, then director of design at Towle Silversmiths from 1953." -- from the website: 925-1000.com Page: American Modernist Jewelers and Silversmiths III
"William DeHart was an early maker of American Modernist enamel jewelry. It is believed that this is the same William DeHart that was either president or artistic director of Towle Silversmiths in the late 1950s when they were producing a line of modernist sterling dishes decorated in abstract enamel paintings." -- from the website: ModernSilver.com Page: The Wearable Art Movement Part I by Marbeth Schon
